Subject Description

This subject charts changes that have impacted on the public sector environment: managerialism, competition policy, contract employment and contracting out. Within this context, it analyses the underlying value shifts, organisational changes and challenges for managing for diversity. A specific focus will be on gender analysis of the new public sector work environment, including: debates on pay equity; representation and interests, gender and leadership, the politics of change within organisations, individually negotiated work contracts, masculinities and managerialism, claims about the reappropriation of Equal Opportunity (EO) and diversity discourses; and an evaluation of the current role of EO and Affirmative Action. Students should develop the analytical skills for interpreting diversity policy in management and in relation to gender, race/ethnicity (multiculturalism), disability and sexuality.
