Subject Description

This subject involves an advanced study of problems and issues in contemporary political philosophies, with reference to some of the major theories of Liberalism, Marxism, Republicanism, Anarchism, and the Welfare State, and the application of such theories to contemporary practical issues such as sexuality, race and environment. Students should complete the subject with a general appreciation of the range of issues to which political philosophers have contributed and of principles espoused by such major contemporary thinkers, as Rawls, Nozick, Wolff, and Dworkin; and have a detailed understanding and fully-worked out analysis of some central issue in political philosophy.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
