Subject Description | This subject is a study of the importance of the Court in Medieval Europe in the Middle Ages, both as a socio-political institution and as a cultural construct. The study is based on contemporary writings, both administrative and creative. Topics include: courts and rulers; courts and the Church; the Courtly Ideal: propaganda and subversion; women and the Court; regional variation. On completion of the subject students should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the origins, influences and ideologies which kept the Court at the centre of social, political and intellectual life in the high Middle Ages. |
Assessment | Written work totalling 5000 words. |
