Subject Description

This subject examines the relationship between gender and social change in selected regions of Asia and the Pacific, drawing on the theoretical perspectives and insights of a number of social science and humanities disciplines. On completion of the subject students should have an understanding of: problems of writing about gender and differences; debates on modernity and postmodernity; gender, colonialism and postcolonialism; gender, politics, the state and civil society; masculinities, femininities and sexualities; gender and the New International Division of Labour; gender and agrarian change, gender and development agencies; tourism and sexual politics; gender in the 'industrial' and 'post-industrial' orders and gender and human rights.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
