Subject Description

This subject deals with the economy, society and political framework of Britain after the Great War; the rise of organised labour; the 'Thirties' (the Depression, Fascism; impact of the war in Spain); imperial issues and appeasement, WWII and austerity; finding a role having lost an empire. By the end of the subject, students should: have an appreciation of the social, political and economic force that have shaped Britain's development since the Great War; be able to analyse the substance and impact of ideas such as collectivism; and be aware of the issues raised by Britain's altered world role.
