Subject Description

This subject traces the development of nationalism as the dominant ideology of the Indonesian state, in the light of theories of nationalism. On completion of this subject students should be able to: test the applicability of theories of comparative politics about nationalism and ethnicity to the Indonesian historical experience in the 20th century; compare and contrast the dilemmas of the Indonesian national motto 'Unity and Diversity' with those of Australian aspirations for a united but multicultural society; understand why the state with the largest Muslim population in the world is not an Islamic state.
