Subject Description

This subject explores the relationships between gender, culture and sociality, with an emphasis on cross-cultural analyses. Topics include feminist analyses of the body and biology; gender, race, class and ethnicities; beauty, identity and consumer society; the gendering of politics; private, public and the future of the family; mothering and assisted reproduction; masculinities, femininities and sexualities, and human rights/women's rights. Students should complete the subject with the ability to demonstrate a sound understanding of the main developments in feminist theory; with an understanding of the issues involved in debates about feminist knowledge; with knowledge of the main conceptual schemes dealing with the relationships between gender, class and race.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words.
