Four weeks of the mid-semester break in the United States. Twelve 1-hour lecture/workshops and at least 30 site visits

Subject Description

In this subject, we spend four weeks of the mid-semester break in the United States, where we trace the American Dream from its origins in Puritan Boston, to the present day. We spend time in Boston, New York, and San Francisco, and in each city we visit museums, historic sites, and a range of current day organisations and sites of cultural production. For example, in Boston we visit the Salem Witch Museum, and explore the place of sport in American culture by seeing a baseball game at Fenway Park. In New York we look at popular culture by visiting the NBC studios and the Museum of Radio and Television. In San Francisco, we visit a gospel church and blues club. On return to Australia, students are required to write an essay based on one of the visits. For a complete itinerary, students should contact Dr Glenn Moore. A travel and accommodation package will be available.

Assessment

Written work totalling 8000 words. This will consist of exercises totalling 2000 words written in Boston and New York, and research essay/s of 6000 words submitted in second semester.
