Subject Description

This subject is a study of the ways in which Europeans attempted to consolidate their control over large parts of the globe, against the background of war, revolution and mental transformations in pre-industrial Europe. A particular focus of the subject will be the connection between European ideas of an ordered and civilised society and its images of non-European peoples. In this context students will examine themes of individual personality and political hierarchy, attacks on magic and superstition, programs to eradicate witchcraft and vagrancy, new understandings of the public and private, tensions between tolerations and dissent, enthusiasms concerning the role of reason and nature. Students who complete the subject should become familiar with the period 1620-1770: from the Thirty Years War and the European settlement of North America in the early 17th century, to Cook's landfall in Australia and the eve of the American and French revolutions in the 18th century.
