Subject Description | This subject is a study of the ways in which Europeans of the Renaissance period created a self-identity which put Europe at the centre of the world. This will be explored through the context of new technologies (print and gunpowder), the new roles given to education and past history in the Renaissance, the debates over belief and community stimulated by movements for religious Reformation, the mapping of an expanded geographical world, and through the encounters and conflicts with indigenous peoples in the conquest of the Americas. Students who complete the subject should be familiar with: the period from 1450-1620; the impact of the invention of print; the emergence of the European states; Columbus' epic voyages of the later 15th century to the Thirty Years War; and permanent settlement of North America by the Dutch, French and English in the early 17th century. |
Assessment | Written work totalling 4000 words. |
