Subject Description

Through analysis of contemporary documents and a wide variety of secondary sources (the writings of modern historians), this subject examines the major changes which took place in western Europe between 300 AD and 1066 AD. We focus on the life of ordinary people, clerics and nobles, the marriage of Roman and Germanic institutions which form the background of Early Modern Europe, and the nature and importance of early medieval institutions. Through tutorials, lectures and readings students should learn to argue productively and to ask questions of the historical data. An aim of the subject is that students will not just 'learn' history, but learn to 'make' history themselves.
