Subject Description

This subject in contemporary history considers the new century from the perspective of its immediate past, a past still being created. The time is the second half of the 20th century. The place is the world. The issues will take us from nuclear power to global warming, from genocide to ethnic cleansing, from anti-colonial struggles to democracy movements, from penicillin to AIDS, from television to the internet, from the Cold War to globalisation. Through critical reading, viewing documentaries, classroom discussion and individual research, students will be invited to reflect on past, present and future as we attempt to analyse and comprehend the making of our time.

Assessment
