Subject Description

This subject builds on skills acquired in 126-068 Viking Studies A. It studies further the Old Norse language and the literature of early Scandinavia as well as the culture of Scandinavia during the Viking Age with special emphasis on mythology and religion. On completion of this subject students should have consolidated and extended their knowledge of the Old Norse language so that they can read a short saga with the aid of a dictionary.

Assessment

A 2-hour written examination, an essay of 1000 words, and regular language tests and assignments totalling 1000 words.

  • Various authors, Hákonar saga goda, Njals saga, The Prose Edda (Snorri Sturluson).
