Subject Description

This subject is designed to take students from a knowledge of core western Semitic, gained in 115-003 Beginners Semitics A, to a working knowledge of one of the Semitic languages introduced in first semester. Students should extend their vocabulary in the relevant dialect; be able to discuss texts in their historical, literary and linguistic contexts; and will study the development of the corpus of relevant texts from the perspective of literary canons. The subject will focus on historical (rather than literary or ideological) aspects of the ancient linguistic task.

Assessment

Written work totalling 2000 words, and two 1-hour class tests.
