Subject Description

This subject is an introduction to the study of ancient Semitic languages. It moves between the general and the specific, investigating the major features of this language family as well as features specific to the north-western Semitic languages. Lectures will discuss the particular skills and techniques used to read Semitic languages, including historical reconstruction. A major focus of this subject is the core grammar, vocabulary and syntax of the Canaanite language with a view to the further study of Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Ugaritic, Ethiopic and/or other related languages. Students will read a collection of inscriptions and poetic texts.

Assessment

Written work equivalent to 2000 words, and two 1-hour class tests.
