 110-085 Supervised Reading in Indonesian Studies

Formerly available as 150-433. Students who have completed 150-433 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. Enrolment in the subject is subject to approval of the coordinator. Students should note that approval of a course of reading will be subject to availability of staff with expertise in the field concerned.

Prerequisites

Students must be enrolled in the Indonesian combined Honours Program or in Islamic Studies/Asian Studies. Knowledge of Indonesian is required.

A 1-hour seminar per fortnight, and 7 hours contract reading per week

Subject Description

This subject offers students the chance to undertake independent research in Indonesian and Malaysian studies in areas of interest to them for which supervision is available, and present the findings of their research in a scholarly manner. Topics might include: Islam in Southeast Asia, Indonesian linguistics, modern Indonesian and Malay literature, modern Indonesian history, politics and economics, Indonesian anthropology.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
