A 1-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial per week, and a 1-hour lecture every second week

Subject Description

This subject forms a linguistic approach to Chinese. By the end of the subject students should know how to apply the principles of general linguistics to the analysis of Chinese; analyse some major linguistic characteristics of Chinese in the areas of phonology, morphology and syntax; conduct investigations on Chinese dialects; and transcribe Chinese material using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Assessment

A 2-hour examination, and assignments and homework totalling 2000 words.
