Subject Description | This subject will trace the development of Jewish national thought through the writings of Jewish national thinkers: from the impact of Theodore Herzl in the 19th century to the development of three streams of Jewish national thought in the first half of the 20th century. These streams include: Labour - to be studied through the works of A D Gordon; Revisionism - to be studied through the works of Ze'ev Jabotinsky; Religion - to be studied through the works of Rav Kook. Students should become familiar with issues of: the status of the Hebrew language in the Jewish national renaissance; shifts in Jewish national writing following the establishment of the State of Israel; war and peace; the Rabin assassination; Israel-diaspora relations; and future directions in Jewish national thought, including post-Zionism. |
Assessment | Written work totalling 4000 words, and class participation. |
