Subject Description

This subject is an intensive introduction to contemporary Jewish life and culture, with an emphasis on Israel and the diaspora, and the key events, ideas and movements that shaped Jewish history such as, the impact of Zionism and the origins of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. Students should become familiar with current issues facing the Jewish people such as: assimilation, secular-orthodox tensions, Ashkenasim and Sephardim, and the Law of Return. The evolution of the Orthodox, Reform and Conservative religious movements is also examined. Students will encounter a selection of short stories, poems, songs, newspaper articles, critical documents and audio-visual materials to gain a better sociological, cultural, political and literary understanding of the topics explored.

Assessment

A seminar paper of 1000 words, two essays of 1500 words each, and class participation.
