Subject Description

The subject introduces the major forms of Greek religious activity, by a detailed examination of specific cult sites and ritual activity, supplemented by textual evidence of important theories of sacrifice, gift-giving, religious personnel and temple economics, as discussed by the great scholars of Greek religion: the Cambridge School, the French School, Burkert, Jamieson, Versnel. Students who complete this subject should have acquired an understanding of the different forms of Greek cult; and a knowledge of the fundamental involvement of Greek religion in Greek society and culture.
