Subject Description

This subject is a study of selected works of Classical Greek and Roman literature which have helped shape European literature. These works include the Epic, Tragedy, Lyric Poetry, and History. The subject also focuses on the societies which produced such literature, with emphasis on Greek (Athenian) Democracy and Roman Imperialism. On completion of the subject students should recognise the distinctive features of the main genres of classical literature and understand how to approach classical literature and its achievements.
