Subject Description | This subject involves a research seminar in which students will investigate the two key figures of the pre-1918 avant-garde in terms of recent scholarship. Issues treated include the academic sources of radical art; the dealer-critic system; Fauvism and the Salon; nationalism, anarchism and art; literary thematics; expression and the body; and significations of cubism and collage. Students who complete the subject should be able to address specific art-historical problems in French art (1900-1915) from the perspective of current scholarship and theories of interpretation and have a good knowledge of major art movements and trends in criticism as exemplified by Matisse and Picasso. |
