Subject Description

This subject involves the study of the archaeology of prehistoric cultures from the emergence of hunter-gatherer societies to the earliest sedentary communities. The subject covers the period from about 4 million years ago to 4000 BC, although more recent Australian hunter-gatherer communities will also be studied. Students who complete the subject should have developed a knowledge of archaeological methods to study processes of cultural change; acquired a basic knowledge of artifact analysis; and have an understanding of current theoretical approaches for the study of text-less archaeological traditions.

Assessment

An essay of 3000 words and a take-home examination of 1000 words.
