Subject Description

This subject introduces students to cultural policy studies as a distinct domain of cultural studies. The subject will situate the development of cultural policy studies within Australia and internationally as both a theoretical and practical challenge to other versions of cultural studies. By working through the characterisation of cultural criticism as opposed to cultural policy studies students will become familiar with the stakes involved in defining and operating within the field of cultural policy studies. Students will be required to analyse specific instances of cultural policy development at local, state and federal levels in areas including broadcast, urban and youth policy interventions and cultural policy in relation to museums, the ABC and the Australia Council, as well as considering cultural policy in relation to legal and legislative intervention.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.

Prescribed Texts

A subject reader will be available from the department.
