Faculty of Music : Guide to courses
Bachelor of Music students who wish to undertake a primary or secondary teaching qualification and who have completed at least one year of the Bachelor of Music can apply to transfer to the combined Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching - a five year full-time (or approved equivalent) program. The combined course comprises a total of 500 points with 350 points undertaken in the Bachelor of Music and 150 points in the Bachelor of Teaching. The first three years of the combined course are devoted to music subjects, with the Bachelor of Teaching subjects normally undertaken in years 4 and 5.
Graduates qualify for registration as specialist music teachers in primary or secondary schools in both classroom and instrumental teaching methods, and can also teach in private practice.
Note:
students must have completed a minimum of 300 points in music subjects before being able to proceed to the Bachelor of Teaching subjects;
students who are completing a Diploma (such as the Diploma in Modern Languages) concurrently with the Bachelor of Music must have completed a minimum of 300 points in the Music/Diploma course and have undertaken sufficient music studies to proceed to the Bachelor of Teaching component of the combined course.
Practicum Requirements
Bachelor of Teaching students complete a minimum of 45 days of supervised practice teaching in schools plpus an extended intenship in final year. BMus/BTeach students should note that they are expected to meet their practicum committments where these may occur in semester breaks when some music subjects are offered on an intensive basis.
Honours Degree
Students who wish to complete the Bachelor of teaching (Honours) within years 4 and 5 will be able to apply in the same way as all other BTeach students.
Deferral
Deferral of a place in the combined course is not available.
Part-time Studies
Part-time studies are available in the first three years of the combined course (the predominantly music component) but not in years 4 and 5 (the BTeach component).
Selection into the BMus/BTeach
Students must initially gain admission to the Bachelor of Music through the normal VTAC and audition processes. At the end of the first year of the BMus, students who have completed at least 87.5 (including Practical Study 1-1 and 1-2) points can apply for the combined course by submitting an internal transfer application to the Faculty of Education. Admission to the combined course is also possible provided that the prerequisite subjects for the two teaching areas have been completed.
Selection will be based on academic merit.
