Faculty of Arts : Guide to courses
Arts study is dynamic and challenging. The courses and subjects on offer reflect the latest developments in research and disciplinary knowledge across the humanities and social sciences.
The Faculty of Arts offers the widest range of courses and areas of study of all the faculties at the University of Melbourne. As an Arts student you can study a huge range of traditional and non-traditional areas, from classical studies to cultural studies. Arts subjects will challenge, inspire and surprise you. They are designed to engage both your creative and critical faculties; to develop you personally as well as academically.
Arts study encourages you to form original and informed opinions on all sorts of issues and to think on your feet. Perhaps most importantly of all, you will develop expertise in research, analysis and communication that will open up a range of exciting and satisfying career paths.
The Faculty aims to:

To promote fairness and consistency in grading across all Arts departments, the Faculty of Arts has a Faculty-wide scale for the award of grades at each year level.
In the awarding of grades in any department, the average of all marks between 50% and 100% should be:
68% for the First Year cohort
70% for the Second Year cohort
72% for the Third Year cohort
A year cohort is the term used for all students at a particular year level within the one discipline or department.
The University's standard grading system for subjects is detailed on Subject grades and marks of this handbook.
