Korean is the language of 60 million Koreans in South and North Korea and also of millions of Koreans living in communities outside Korea, especially in Japan, China, Russia and the United States. Modern Korea is the direct heir of an ancient and distinct tradition with a recorded history of two thousand years. The Korean language is broadly similar to Japanese in structure but its writing system, called Han-gul, lacks the complexity of the Japanese and Chinese writing systems. Economic and cultural ties between South Korea and Australia make it desirable that more Australians undertake the study of Korean language.

These subjects are offered as complementary subjects in conjunction with Swinburne University of Technology.

 1. Faculty of Arts requirements

Special enrolment arrangements apply. Students must contact the Faculty of Arts Office for application forms and details.

Subject to sufficient enrolment, and the availability of teaching staff, classes will be taught at the University of Melbourne's Parkville campus.

Studies in Korean may not be taken in conjunction with any other complementary course language subjects.

 2. Language study streams

The Korean Section at Swinburne University of Technology offers two streams of Korean language:

Beginners

Post-VCE

The Department determines the language stream in which a student is to enrol. Placement is based on VCE results, other language study record, or a placement test.

Stream enrolment remains provisional until confirmed or, alternatively, altered according to the student's needs as determined by the language Department during the first two weeks of teaching. Where a change is made in the third or fourth week of semester it will be reported to the Associate Dean (Academic Programs).

 8. Further study

A BA with a Major in Korean can lead to the completion of higher degrees such as MAs and PhDs at universities around the world.

 9. Career opportunities

Korea is a significant market for Australian exports. Companies such as BHP, CRA, ANZ and NAB all actively trade with Korea and have offices in Seoul. The need for graduates with specialist Asian experience, and especially Korean language skills, is expanding.

As the trading link between Australia and Korea has strengthened graduates are keenly sought by government departments dealing in areas like foreign affairs and trade. Indeed in recognition of the importance of the relationship between Korea and Australia, the Federal Government has approved Korean as one of its four main Asian languages for secondary education. Consequently the demand for Korean speakers in the field of education is strong and likely to grow consistently.
