Subject Description | Women writers have come to the fore in Spain in the twentieth century particularly since the Civil War period. This subject is a general introduction to the works of some of these writers and an examination of their place in Spanish literature and society. This will be followed by a more detailed study of some specific works. Students who complete this subject should have an understanding of the major literary trends and developments in 20th century Spain, particularly since the Civil War, and have an appreciation of the important role of women writers within those trends and developments. On completion of this subject students should have an understanding of the status of women in Spanish society (pre- and post-Civil War) and the reflection of that status (and of Spanish society in general) in Spanish women's writing, and have an understanding of the impact of Spanish feminism and feminist literary theory on Spanish women's writing. |
Assessment | Class participation, an essay of 2500 words, a 1500-word written assignment, and a 20-minute oral presentation. |
