Subject Description

The focus of this course is the present reality of Spain in its cultural and linguistic diversity, the role of Spain in the modern world, the position of women in contemporary Spanish society and the historical background to the modern world (civil war, transition from dictatorship to democracy). In relation to these facets of Spain, a range of films, as well as texts and at least one painting - 'Guernica' - will be considered.

Assessment

A 500-word written exercise, and a 1500-word essay, and a 15-minute oral presentation, and a 1.5-hours final test, and 10% class participation.

A reading list will be supplied in the first week of class.
