Subject Description

This English language subject traces the major developments in Latin American narrative since the so-called 'boom' period of the '60s and '70s. Novels in English translation by Allende (Chile), García Márquez (Colombia) and Vargas Llosa (Peru) will be studied in the context of Latin American society and in relation to some of the vital literary issues that have come to the fore since the 'boom' including the nexus between the Latin American and European novel, politics and gender, and the role of the literary intellectual in the Spanish-speaking world. Attention will also be given to the problems posed by the course itself, those of literature in translation.

Assessment

Class participation, and two essays (one of 1500 words and one of 2000 words), and a 1500-word tutorial paper.

Prescribed Texts

A reading list will be supplied in the first week of class.
