Subject Description

Students will be able to demonstrate skill in the transcription from obsolete notations to modern notation in line with current standards of scholarly practice; be familiar with the criteria and principles of modern editorial practice; have acquired basic skills in computerised notation programs for the production of scholarly editions.

The subject covers major styles of notation used in Western music from the middle ages to the early 17th century. Seminars will be based around the production of transcriptions of works from major manuscripts and printed sources of the period.

Assessment

A minimum of ten transcriptions realised during the semester.
