 620-151 Introduction to Biomedical Mathematics

Note

This subject is part of the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences program. Students for other degree programs who did not take VCE Specialist Maths but with very good results in VCE Mathematical Methods 3/4 interested in this subject as an alternative to 620-161 may be permitted to enrol, at the discretion of the Director of First Year Studies, whose permission is required.

Students may only gain credit for one of 620-151 and 620-161.

Subject Description

This subject develops elementary rules for manipulating matrices; concepts of basic functions of one and two variables; and basic procedures for the solution of differential equations. Students should develop manipulative skills in the use of matrices and standard functions; the skills to find derivatives and antiderivatives of functions of one and two variables; an ability to apply these skills to word problems in bioscience. This subject demonstrates the sequential conceptual structure of the mathematics of functions and the value of differential equations in bioscience.

Matrices: row operations, systems of linear equations, graphical and matrix methods for linear programming; duality; applications in bioscience. Calculus: functions of one real variable; differentiation and integration of standard functions; related rates of change; differential equations, including simple simultaneous equations and their applications to population dynamics and physiological systems; numerical solution of differential equations.

Assessment

Up to 24 pages of written assignments, a three-hour end-of-semester written examination and class tests totalling not more than 1.5 hours.
