Subject Description

This subject introduces the fundamental processes of identifying requirements, specifying, and designing information systems. Students will gain experience in the tools and techniques for all stages of the analysis and design cycle. Topics may include analysis techniques, data modelling, feasibility assessment, process modelling, automated support tools including Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE), database design and specification, prototyping, and systems-development methodologies.

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • understand structured and object-oriented software development;

  • be able to apply appropriate techniques to different stages of software life-cycle;

  • have hands-on experience with software development tools for systems analysis and design;

  • be able to participate in team projects involving analysis and design of medium-scale information systems.

Assessment

A 2-hour end-of-semester written exam; group projects. The project work is expected to take up to 40 hours in total. The weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject. Successful completion of this subject requires a pass in both the exam and the practical portion of the assessment.
