Subject Description | The subject comprises lectures, student seminars and experimental work, and focuses on nutritional physiology. Topics include: Body composition, water, mineral and electrolyte balance, lipid digestion and turnover, dietary carbohydrate, fibre and bone metabolism; Nutrition changes in disease states including, hypertension, plasma lipoproteins, hyperlidipemia, atheroscelerosis, diabetes and osteoporosis. Research projects include: body composition related to energy balance; manipulation of dietary fat and electrolyte intake and the effect on blood pressure and blood lipids. The research projects are designed to develop skills in experimental design, data acquisition and processing specially related to the study of nutrition. |
Assessment | A 3-hour open book exam at the end of semester, reports of practical projects (2 x 1000 words), contribution to seminars, and a literature review (1500 words). |
