Subject Description | Comprehension of the terminology and molecular basis and principles regarding the major types of disease processes, their causes and the responses of cells; development of skills to identify and interpret the appearance of disease processes; acquiring communication skills to describe diseases; appreciate the importance of evaluation of the clinical manifestations of diseases; and the capabilities and limitations of laboratory investigations (including all clinical pathology disciplines and radiology). The subject covers: First semester - General Pathology: Injury to cells and tissues; reaction to injury; vascular disorders; diabetes; disorders of growth; other pathological processes; environmental and nutritional disorders; genetic and developmental disorders; infectious disease; immunopathology. Second semester - Systemic Pathology: Respiratory system; cardio-vascular system; gastrointestinal tract; kidney and urinary tract; bone; endocrine system; blood and lymphoid system; neuropathology. |
Assessment | A 1-hour written examination at the end of first semester (30%) An essay of up to 3000 words (optional), a 2-hour written examination (40%) and a 2-hour practical examination (30%) at the end of second semester. Viva voce examinations may be required. |
