Note

Students must advise the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of their order of preference for the alternative class times; as well as the other subjects they will be taking, during the second last week of Semester 1. This subject should be taken by all students contemplating a full major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the 300 level. Restricted choices at the 300 level apply to candidates presenting with only 521-221. (521-222 is a prerequisite for subjects 521-302 and 521-323)

Subject Description

By the end of the program the student will have advanced manipulative skills and will have furthered their appreciation of practical procedures in biochemistry and molecular biology as stated for the prerequisite subject 521-221. Additional objectives will be to develop skills in the analyses of nucleic acids and in the use of computers for relevant experimental simulation and nucleic acid data base searching and sequence analysis. Experiments involving common techniques used in the purification and analysis of DNA and small molecules of biochemical and clinical importance; experimental and computer-based gene cloning and sequencing; introduction to the use of computer-based DNA and protein data bases; designing applications of enzyme assays; metabolic investigations; discussion of the scientific literature. An opportunity is available for students to make scheduled visits to research laboratories within the Department. Conditional exemption from experiments that use animals may be granted in some circumstances by the Head of the Department.

Assessment

Continuous assessment (65%) and examinations during the practical session times (35%).
