Four lectures a week and eight hours of laboratory classes and practice classes/tutorials a fortnight

Subject Description

The principal objectives are to develop (i) an understanding of the relationships between nutrition, metabolism, hormonal control systems, gene activity and genetic variation in the development and function of the human body, (ii) skills in experimental observation, computer-based self-directed learning, clinically relevant data interpretation and problem solving, and (iii) an appreciation of the contribution of nutritional and biochemical processes to health and disease. Major topics covered: Cellular control, tissue specialisation and the integration of metabolism, normally and during fasting and starvation; mechanisms of action and interrelationships of hormones; regulation of hormone secretion; nutritional requirements of humans during various physiological states, nutritive value of foods, parental nutrition, nutrition in obesity and vitamin and mineral deficiency; human molecular genetics, including familial aspects of cancer and other genetic diseases, recombinant DNA techniques, genetic engineering and DNA diagnostics; control of gene expression related to differentiation, tissue proliferation and carcinogenesis. Laboratory and clinical biochemistry oriented practice classes and computer-based self-directed learning and revision.

Assessment

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination (85%); laboratory (10%) and practice class (5%) work.
