Subject Description

This subject covers the physiotherapy assessment and treatment of common neurological disorders and includes aetiology, medical and surgical management. The course content includes the pathophysiology of neurological and neurosurgical conditions and explores how normal activities may be impaired by neurological dysfunction. The student will practice assessment skills on inidividuals with neurological deficits and start to use their findings to establish problem lists and apply appropriate treatment skills. The principles of problem solving, goal setting and outcome measurement will be introduced to enable development/modification of a basic patient management plan.

The theoretical component of the course explores theories of motor control and motor learning with respect to neurological disorders such as stroke, parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, head injuries, brain tumours and spinal cord injuries. It also provides an introduction into paediatric neurology. The students will develop handling skills, with emphasis on safety and effectiveness, and further their understanding of normal movement. The clinical component of the course aims to enhance practical application of this theoretical knowledge and practical skills, emphasizing assessment and treatment skills, the ability to formulate a problem list and the implementation of a basic management plan for patients with neurological disorders.
