Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should comprehend the pathophysiology of medical and surgical cardiothoracic conditions, assessment and treatment procedures, and the principles of problem solving. Students will have developed skills in managing uncomplicated medical and surgical patients including accurate assessment, performance of basic techniques and the ability to safely implement and modify these as necessary. The theoretical component will cover pathophysiology of less complex cardiothoracic disorders, such as infective and supperative lung diseases, diseases of airflow limitation, cardiology and paediatric respiratory disorders. Equipment used in the management of cardiothoracic patients will also be studied. Clinical practice will emphasise performance of assessment and treatment skills and an ability to formulate basic management plans for less complex medical and surgical patients.

Assessment

Clinical assessment including continuous assessment and examination (totalling 50%), and a tutorial presentation and a 3-hour end of year written examination (totalling 50%). Students must pass both clinical and theoretical components of the assessment in order to pass the overall subject.
