A total of 596 hours of lectures, preclinical restorative dentistry, clinical practicum, and seminars plus 120 hours of clinical experience

Subject Description

This subject covers preclinical restorative dentistry and applied dental therapy.

On completion of this subject, the student should:

Comprehend the techniques associated with operative dentistry;

Demonstrate: an ability to apply the knowledge relevant to restoring teeth in a practical and clinical situation; the attainment of the degree of technical experience and skill required in the restoration of permanent and deciduous teeth at a clinical level; an ability to examine, record and identify general abnormalities of the oral cavity; prepare treatment plans and provide treatment as specified by the Dentists Acts within Australia; an ability to select and administer suitable preventive modalities to individual patients; an ability to evaluate critically, the response to treatment they have provided to their patients; an ability to describe referral pathways for patients who require treatment beyond the scope of the dental therapist; and a professional approach to dental therapy.

Assessment

(A) Continuing assessment of procedures performed in the pre-clinical laboratory (35%); (B) One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 1 covering the preclinical and clinical theory components of this subject (20%). (C) Continuing assessment of clinical procedures performed during the applied dental therapy component (20%); (D) A final clinical examination over one and a half days in the clinic and a 15-minute oral examination at the completion of this subject (25%).

A pass is required in Sections A, B, C and D for an overall pass in the subject.
