Subject Description

This subject covers topics dealing with the management of patients with a range of disabilities.

On completion of this subject, the student should:

Comprehend: the behavioural and management aspects of people with chronic and acute medical problems, physical, sensory or intellectual disabilities, and who are homebound, hospitalised and institutionalised; and the disease processes related to the dental management of patients with medical conditions and the oral manifestations of systemic disease.

Appreciate the diversity of people within the community and the responsibility and problems in delivering dental care to them.

Have developed sufficient technical skill to provide oral hygiene instructions to, and remove calculus from, a range of patients with disabilities.

Assessment

One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 2 (50%); and written assignments and practical reports throughout the year (50%).
