Subject Description | This subject covers topographical anatomy of the oral cavity and comparative dental anatomy. On completion of this subject, students should: Comprehend: the fundamental terminology and nomenclature of anatomy and dentistry; the morphology of teeth in the human dentition, their occlusion and other pertinent anatomical relationships; the life history of individual teeth and the chronology of development of the dentition; the relationship of humans to other members of the animal kingdom with respect to diet, dentition, teeth and cranial anatomy; comparative oral anatomy including the evolutionary theories regarding the origins of hard tissues, the different mechanisms of attachment and the differences in dental anatomy in both extant and extinct animals. Be able to: observe and record clinical and laboratory findings in a coherent and systematic way; find information from textbooks and scientific articles to augment lecture notes; carve teeth from blocks of wax. Appreciate: the fundamental importance of oral anatomy to the present state of knowledge in dental science and to future developments in the practice of dentistry; that different aspects of the course in oral anatomy are treated with different emphasis; the inter-relationship between oral anatomy and other disciplines outside dentistry. |
Assessment | A 90-minute written examination at the end of semester 1 (50%) and assessment of written and practical work during semester 1 (50%). A pass is required in both sections. Additional tests, including viva voce and/or practical examinations may be required. |
