Health and Society Unit: 28 hours of lectures and tutorials. Human Mind and Behaviour in Health and Illness Unit: 14 hours of lectures and tutorials. Introduction to Clinical Medicine Unit: Seven 3-hour tutorials/demonstrations and six 3-hour clinical placements/tutorials

Subject Description

This semester builds on concepts in Semester 1 within each unit. Health and Society will provide an introduction to clinical epidemiology and the evidential, ethical and cultural dimensions of clinical decision making. Content areas include the evaluation and critical appraisal of clinical evidence, social and cultural factors in medical decision making, basic principles of ethical practice and introduction to legal and economical issues in relation to health. Human Mind and Behaviour will investigate the concepts of development, personality and coping and explore their relationships. Introduction to Clinical Medicine will introduce the structured medical interview with emphasis on nutrition, the gastrointestinal, hepato-biliary and renal systems and abdominal physical examination. Students will commence their Child, Growth and Development study, with long term observation of the growth and development of a baby from the first year of life to approximately the age of five.

Assessment

Introduction to Clinical Medicine: Performance based assessment which may include direct observation or videotaped review of medical interview, physical examination, and/or oral or written presentation of history and physical examination findings (30%);. Human Mind and Behaviour and Health and Society: 1.5 hour written exam (60%); 1000 word written assignment (10%).
