Subject Description | Objectives are to develop an understanding of the development of the gastrointestinal and renal systems and the relationship between structure and function of these systems in health and disease, the basis of human metabolism and the interaction of metabolic and catabolic pathways at cellular and tissue level, the regulation of fluid electrolyte and acid base balance, and the relationship between metabolic disturbance and disease of the gastrointestinal and renal systems. Content areas include dietary composition and needs, changing nutritional requirements in development, ageing and disease, diet and the pathogenesis of disease, the development, structure, function and regulation of the gastrointestinal tract, the metabolism of nutrients and the disturbance of this metabolism and the regulation of fluid, electrolyte and acid balance. Emergency Medicine will comprise two problem-based tutorials integrating the principles of assessment and care of common emergencies with the biomedical science content of the system block. Aspects of the delivery and organisational structure of emergency medical systems will also be covered. |
Assessment | Emergency Medicine assignment up to 1500 words (10%); Written assignment up to 2000 words (10%); Practical class assignment (max 1200 words) (10%); Tutor assessment (20%); End of semester exam (up to 4 hours of written assessment) (50%). |
