Subject Description | This subject comprises four units: Health and Society, Human Mind and Behaviour in Health and Illness, Introduction to Clinical Medicine and Introduction to Emergency Medicine. The principal objectives are to develop the concepts of normal and abnormal in relation to the human mind, introduce the biopsychosocial model, develop basic medical communication skills, to explore major ethical issues in medical practice and to introduce social and cultural concepts of health and illness. Content areas include the biological basis of behaviour, personality development, social identity and group function, the biopsychosocial model, the structure of medical practice, ethical responsibilities to patients, colleagues and the community, health belief models, public health and health promotion, communication and interviewing skills and the medical interview. Emergency medicine will comprise a basic first aid course. |
Assessment | Emergency Medicine & First Aid: First aid test (St. John's Ambulance standard) (Hurdle requirement); Introduction to Clinical Medicine: Performance based assessment of a videotaped medical interview (30%); Human Mind and Behaviour and Health and Society: 1.5 hour written exam (60%); 1000 word written assignment (10%). |
