Subject Description

On completion students should be able to comprehend a wide variety of numerical computational techniques for solving ordinary and partial differential equations frequently encountered in engineering problems and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the various competing computational methods.

Topics covered include; modelling engineering systems using ordinary and partial differential equations; finite different schemes; finite element schemes; finite volume schemes; boundary element methods; vortex element methods; spectral and general basis function methods; chaotic behaviour of nonlinear systems; supercomputer architecture; vector and parallel processing.

Assessment

One examination not exceeding three-hours (60%); assignments to a maximum of 5000 words or equivalent on the computer (40%)
