Subject Description

On satisfactory completion of this unit students should be able to; understand the structure and characteristics of computer numerical control systems and their servo drives; relate machine tool contouring errors to servo drive characteristics; plan for and write simple part programs using standard NC code.

Topics covered include; overview: Structure of NC and CNC motion control systems for manufacturing. Sensors and actuators: characteristics of some common analog and digital sensors and actuators of relevance to production, in particular drives for machine tools and robots. Signal conditioning: amplification and filtering, design of analog interface circuits using op-amps; design of simple logic circuits. Numerical control: requirements for NC programming; NC codes according to international standards; NC programming.

Assessment

One examination not exceeding three-hours; tests, assignments and laboratory reports not exceeding the equivalent of 2500 words each
