Subject Description

The principal aim of this unit is to expose students to some fundamental concepts related to the acquisition of data, and to the subsequent processing of that data for the extraction of its information content. Upon completion of this course students should; have gained an initial exposure to transducers; have acquired the skills necessary for the use of AC and DC electrical/electronic measuring instruments; be able to analyse and design simple electronic circuits using the operational amplifier as the basic building block; have an understanding of some elementary signal processing concepts such as sampling and filtering.

The content includes; transducers: Introduction to some commonly used transducers in civil engineering. AC and DC Measuring Instruments: PMMC and rectifying instruments. Operational Amplifier Circuit Design; amplifiers, buffers; intergrators and differentiators. Signal Processing Techniques: Sampling, aliasing, filtering, A/D and D/A conversions.

Assessment

One written examination not exceeding three-hours, practice lasses, tests and assignments not exceeding 12 pages, laboratory reports up to 1200 words to be submitted at the end of each laboratory session
