Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should; understand frequency domain based control system compensation techniques and be able to use these techniques to design simple compensators; understand techniques for nonlinear system analysis; understand the concept of state space and the state space approach to control system analysis; understand the concept of state estimation; be able to design controllers for simple control systems using the state space approach.

The content includes; frequency domain approach to control system compensation: Introduction to control system compensation, lead compensation and design, lag compensation and design, lag-lead compensation, PID controller. Introduction to system optimisation: Performance indexes, computation of performance indexes. Analysis of nonlinear systems: Performance and properties of nonlinear systems, nonlinearities, linearisation of nonlinear systems, describing functions, limit cycles, stability analysis. State space approach to control system analysis: State space representation of dynamic systems, phase plane analysis, mathematical background, transformation of state equations, solution to state equations, controllability and observability, criteria for testing controllability and observability, controllable and observable canonical forms. State space approach to control system design: State feedback pole placement, state observers, output controller using state observer.

Assessment
