Subject Description | Force systems: resolution of forces; moments of a force; couples; moments of distributed forces. Equilibrium, support systems. Shear force, bending moments in beams. Forces in pin-connected trusses. Equilibrium concepts via virtual work. Stress, strain, elasticity in one and two dimensions. Stress transformation. Stress and deflection due to bending and torsion. Indeterminate systems. Basic structure and classification of materials, rheological models and their application. The relationship between material properties and micro-structure as applied to civil engineering materials. The properties of masonry as they are affected by material quality and workmanship. Application and properties of sealants and protective coatings. |
Assessment | A three-hour end-of-semester written examination (85%); an assignment of not more than words (15%). |
